The realistic paintings of James Fiorentino depict some of the state’s most endangered and vulnerable species. During the premiere exhibit through October, sales of the original paintings, limited edition digital prints and a book with a forward by former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, as well as wildlife merchandise, will benefit D&R Greenway Land Trust and Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey.
“Renowned as one of the best sports artists in the country, Jim’s works hang in major museums,” says Governor Kean, who met the artist while serving as president of Drew University—Fiorentino was a student there in the 1990s, when his sports figures started receiving national attention. He was featured on ABC World News and in The New York Times. “In recent years he has turned to wildlife. Jim has created an amazing body of work... Many of the creatures he paints are endangered, and Jim celebrates their uniqueness and beauty.”
“Mr. Fiorentino’s incredibly evocative artwork inspires viewers by putting a spotlight on these charismatic yet often overlooked wildlife species,” says Conserve Wildlife Foundation New Jersey Executive Director David Wheeler. “His watercolor paintings truly bring wildlife to life. His art helps to educate and engage viewers about the precipitous declines that many of these species have suffered and helps us bring attention to the very tangible steps that people can take to save and strengthen these wildlife populations.”
“The subject of disappearing New Jersey wildlife speaks directly to the work that we do to protect habitats,” says D&R Greenway President & CEO Linda Mead. “As an admirer of James Fiorentino’s artistic talent, I am thrilled that we were selected as the premiere venue for this exhibition. Conserve Wildlife Foundation New Jersey has been a long-time partner with D&R Greenway, exhibiting their Species on the Edge fifth-grade art and essay contest winners annually in our Olivia Rainbow Gallery.” This year, the fifth graders art will be exhibited simultaneously with the Fiorentino exhibit, beginning September 12.
In 2014, Conserve Wildlife’s David Wheeler attended D&R Greenway's Wild Creatures: Protecting Endangered Wildlife for 40 Years and saw a bobcat and red-tailed hawk painted by Fiorentino. Wheeler invited Fiorentino to judge the Species on the Edge youth contest, and from there wheels began to spin about an exhibition.
Fiorentino, 39, started painting animals when he was 10. Governor Kean’s passion for nature inspired him to become a trustee for the Raptor Trust in Millington, N.J. “We rehabilitate 4,000 wild birds a year and release about half that number,” says Fiorentino. “These wild birds have had a tremendous influence on me. I enjoy getting close to birds of prey, and it brought me back to nature art.” Before going back to his studio to paint the details, Fiorentino sketches the animals up close, sometimes holding them, taking in their details.
The Middlesex County native moved to Flemington with his wife 11 years ago. “I am awed by what we see in our own backyard: the (endangered) Eastern box turtle, great horned owl, pileated woodpeckers, foxes, hawks and butterflies. It’s an amazing backyard ecosystem.” His two young sons enjoy being in nature, the older one joining his father to draw wildlife, especially butterflies—proving that humans, too, benefit from having wildlife in their midst.
“Because of the 20,000 acres preserved by D&R Greenway, endangered wildlife who make their home in New Jersey will continue to have a supportive habitat,” says Fiorentino.
D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST IS IN ITS 27TH YEAR of preserving and protecting natural lands, farmlands and open spaces throughout central and southern New Jersey. Through continuous preservation and stewardship -- caring for land and easements to ensure they remain protected and ecologically healthy in perpetuity -- D&R Greenway nurtures a healthier and more diverse environment for people and wild species in seven counties. Accredited by the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission, D&R Greenway’s mission is to preserve and care for land and inspire a conservation ethic, now and for the future. Since its founding in 1989, D&R Greenway has permanently preserved close to 20,000 acres, an area 20 times the size of New York City’s Central Park, including 28 miles of trails open to the public.
The Johnson Education Center, a circa 1900 restored barn at One Preservation Place, Princeton, is D&R Greenway’s home. Through programs, art exhibits and related lectures, D&R Greenway inspires greater public commitment to safeguarding land.

Play Ball! - Seton Hall Art Gallery OCtober 23 - December 7, 2012
Seton Hall Art Gallery Exhibit Highlights Biggio, Berra, Jeter
and the Teams and Players Who Inspired A Century of Seton Hall Baseball
Walsh Gallery - October 23 – December 7, 2012
Opening Reception: Tuesday, October 23, 6 to 9 p.m.
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (October 4, 2012) -- Sports artist James Fiorentino's portrait of Seton Hall star player and Houston Astros catcher, Craig Biggio, will be featured in Play Ball! -- a new exhibit opening at the University's Walsh Gallery on Tuesday, October 23, with a reception open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. Running through December 7, Play Ball! highlights a century of baseball history at Seton Hall and the professional players including Biggio, Derek Jeter, Thurman Munson and Yogi Berra, who inspire and contribute to the New York-New Jersey baseball culture.
In addition to original art works by Mr. Fiorentino and sports artist Anthony Capparelli, the exhibit features cultural objects from the sports collection of Ed Lucas, and student history objects from the Seton Hall University's Athletics Department and the Department of Archives and Special Collections.
Original works by both artists and giclée prints of select artworks will be available for purchase by visitors. Proceeds will benefit the Ed and Allison Lucas Scholarship Foundation, which supports Seton Hall students with disabilities.
Alumnus Ed Lucas '62 Turned his Passion for Baseball into a Reporting Career -- and into a Wide Network of Friends and Fans. In spite of being blind for the last 55 years, Ed Lucas has covered the New York area sports scene as a reporter/broadcaster since 1964. Ed lost vision in both eyes during a sandlot baseball game near his home when he was struck between the eyes by a wicked line drive. In 1958, just seven years after losing his sight, Ed enrolled at Seton Hall University, graduating four years later with a degree in communications (one of the first blind students in the country to do so). Today, Ed Lucas continues to inspire others and show people, both disabled and non-disabled, that there are no true handicaps in life.
The different artistic styles of Mr. Fiorentino and Mr. Capparelli capture the professional players and stadiums that have appealed to local fans. Seton Hall baseball is depicted alongside these artworks and suggests the influence of professional leagues on students.
"We wish to convey to visitors that the achievements of professional baseball players encourage and inspire others to strive for success using their own unique talents," stated curators Greg Ferrara and Cori Linville.
Paintings by Mr. Fiorentino feature a self-crafted watercolor technique and his artwork has been displayed in multiple sports institutions, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Mr. Capparelli practices many painting styles and currently teaches art classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Seton Hall University.
While the reception is free to the public, since light refreshments will be served, an RSVP is appreciated by contacting Reesey Mitchell at 973.378.9851 or Sheresia.firstname.lastname@example.org.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is recommended that off-campus visitors call to confirm gallery hours prior to visiting. For more information, please call 973.275.2033 or http://academic.shu.edu/libraries/gallery.

James was the youngest artist member of the NY Society of Illustrators at age 19 and has become one of the most well known sports artists in the country. His watercolor portraits have graced the walls of many famous people, museums and galleries. The other side of his art will be on display for the first time in this show. John Haritos is an innovative rock artist with a unique story. What makes John's talent so unique is the story of his incredible recovery from a devastating automobile accident leaving John in a coma and paralyzed on his right side. John relearned to draw with the opposite hand that he had been used to painting with his entire life. John, also a member of the NY Society of Illustrators has created many illustrations as well as his rock art. John's incredible spirit has allowed him to showcase his talents and pursue his dream of being an artist.
